TUPPER LAKE, FRANKLIN CO. (AP) -- A grassroots group is kicking off a campaign to restore the railroad line between Tupper Lake and Saranac Lake.
The ultimate goal is to eventually have the Adirondack Scenic Railroad run from Utica 90 miles to Lake Placid. To make that possible, tracks have to be renovated between Tupper and Saranac. Currently, the tourist line runs from Utica to Old forge and another train goes from Saranac to Lake Placid.
"Next Stop Tupper Lake," the group working to restore the rundown segment of tracks, is hosting a day of activities at the restored Tupper Lake Depot on Nov. 5 to kick off a fundraising campaign.
A rival group wants to replace the old tracks with a recreational trail. But railroad advocates envision adding a trail beside the renovated tracks.
