ALBION, ORLEANS CO. (AP) -- A man charged with fatally stabbing a New York woman during an apparent carjacking attempt in a Walmart parking lot was free on bail after an assault arrest this summer.

Orleans County District Attorney Joseph Cardone tells WGRZ-TV in Buffalo that Luis Rodriguez-Flamenco was arrested in August on charges he punched a teenage girl in the face. He says the 24-year-old illegal immigrant from Honduras gave police a false name and was later released on $2,000 bail.

Rodriguez-Flamenco pleaded not guilty Wednesday to a charge of second-degree murder in the death of 45-year-old Kathleen Byham.

Byham was headed to her car Sunday night after leaving the Walmart in Albion about a mile from her home when she was repeatedly stabbed.
