SYRACUSE -- Polls have opened and voting is underway statewide for Election Day 2011. Here are some of the featured races we’ll be following today, and reporting on tonight when polls close at 9:00 p.m.
In Onondaga County, both County Executive Joanie Mahoney and District Attorney Bill Fitzpatrick are running unopposed. The most visible individual race in the county may be for Syracuse City Auditor, where Republican Steve Kimatian faces Democrat Marty Masterpole for the office currently held by Phil Latessa. This race has been linked to recent stories about alleged violation of campaign finance laws by Mayor Stephanie Miner’s political action committee. Miner has denied these claims, and is not up for re-election this year.
Elsewhere in the county, two towns have public referendums on the ballot. In Salina, the town has proposed purchasing the current Burdick Chevrolet dealership on Old Liverpool Road, which would replace the aging town hall on School Road as well as the current highway department garage. Also, incumbent Salina Supervisor Mark Nicotra (R) faces a challenge for his post from Democrat Patrick Foster.
In Camillus, village residents will decide whether to dissolve their municipality into the surrounding Town of Camillus. The county comptroller says dissolution will save the average town homeowner at least $77 per year on their tax bill.
In Tompkins County, there is a four-way race for mayor of Ithaca. Democrat Svante Myrick, Republican Janis Kelly, Independent J.R. Clairborne, and Wade Wykstra are facing off to replace outgoing mayor Carolyn Peterson. Other local cities electing mayors today include Auburn, Oneida, Fulton, Oswego, Cortland, Rome, Utica, and Watertown.
In Oneida County, in addition to the aforementioned mayoral races, County Executive Anthony Picente (R) is running for re-election against Conservative challenger Rodger Potocki.
And in the Town of Ledyard in Cayuga County, incumbent Town Clerk Rose Marie Belforti faces a challenge from write-in candidate Ed Easter. Belforti has made national headlines recently for refusing to sign same-sex marriage certificates, instead delegating the duties to a deputy.
