SYRACUSE -- A Syracuse woman will spend the next five to fifteen years in state prison for killing a man in a drunk driving crash.

42-year-old Tina Alcaras appeared for sentencing in Onondaga County Court this morning.

Prosecutors say she was driving erratically down Court Street Road back in August when she slammed into another car. 89-year-old John Nave, of Syracuse, was trying to turn left onto Roxford Road when he was hit. Nave was taken to the hospital where he later died from his injuries.

Deputies say speed and alcohol were both factors in the crash.

Nave's son spoke out following the sentencing, recalling the horrific scene that day. "If she had said blatantly that she's a terrorist driving down the street in a school zone going 70 miles per hour to kill someone as a terrorist you're going to get life in prison, but because she was under the influence of alcohol and drugs, she gets another chance in as short of time as 5 years to do it all over again," said Dr. Dennis Name, the victim's son. "I was there in the emergency room, when my father passed away and he was pronounced, I was part of the resuscitation effort, its probably one of the worst things you have to do as a son, is to be there when you have to call it for your father when you realize there's nothing else that can be done."

Do you agree with the sentence? Is it appropriate, or should it have been longer or shorter? Leave your thoughts below.
