ALBANY -- State health officials say a popular store actually sold radioactive products.

Tests have confirmed low levels of a material called cobalt-60 in metal box tissue holders sold atĀ Bed Bath and Beyond. The radioactive material was found in 12 of the Dual Ridge Boutique model boxes sold at four stores. None of those stores are in Central New York. However, Bed Bath and Beyond says the boxes were available online since July. The product has beenĀ removed from stores and the website.

Bed Bath and Beyond says it has been told by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission that cobalt-60 cannot be inhaled, and does not contaminate other items, like the tissues. State health officials say holding the box against your body for an hour would be equal to a chest x-ray. The material is used for sterilizing medical equipment, and radiation therapy for cancer patients.

If you have the box, you can bring it back to your nearest Bed Bath and Beyond store for a full refund. You can also call 1-800-462-3966 if you have any questions.
