It's something you use everyday that may be hazardous to your health. Did you know your iPod could pose a serious risk?

You put them on your ears not your eyes, but a new study shows wearing headphones while walking might actually increase your chances of getting hit by a car or train. It may sound pretty obvious, but now there is research to back it up.

In 116 cases of people getting struck while wearing headphones from 2004 to 2011, two-thirds of the victims were men under the age of 30. Some 70 percent of the injuries were fatal. In one third of the incidents, the car or train sounded some kind of warning like a horn.

It has happened before. In 2010, a Massachusetts boy was hit by a car while walking with his iPod. Two years earlier in England, a young girl was hit and killed when she walked into traffic while listening to her iPod.

Dr. Richard Lichstein of the University of Maryland Medical School led the study. He says when someone puts on a headset they allocate their attention to what they are hearing while also monitoring their surroundings at the same time. "You really can't do both of those things at 100 percent," Dr. Lichstein said.

Tyler Richardson, who uses an iPod, says when she is out and about her mind is on her music. "I hear the beeping of the cars and stuff sometimes," she said.

Paul Wegerson, who also uses an iPod, says he knows the risk and tries to use his eyes to detect dangers he doesn't hear. "Like when I go running lots of alleyways and dark places that I usually pull up to and peak across so I always try to be mindful about that," he said.

Do you use an iPod while walking? Are you mindful of your surroundings? Does this make you more concerned about the risks? Will it change your behavior? Leave your thoughts below.
