NEW YORK MILLS -- Authorities say a 54-year-old man is being held for observation after surrendering peacefully following a five-hour armed standoff at a central New York apartment complex.
State police say the standoff began Monday afternoon when James Mogle's daughter went to check on him at the Carolyn Courts apartment complex in New York Mills, near Utica.
Troopers say when he brandished a handgun, the daughter left and called 911.
Police negotiators spent about five hours talking with Mogle before he surrendered shortly after 8 p.m. A handgun and rifle were found in his apartment.
Officials say he was distraught over a personal relationship that had ended.
Authorities say Mogle hasn't been charged.
