After US Senator Chuck Schumer called on the FDA to review the caffeine inhaler AeroShot in December, the FDA has now decided to conduct a full review of the lipstick-sized product.
AeroShot hit stores in New York and Boston this past month, as the product did not need FDA review because it is labeled as a dietary supplement. Schumer worries about AeroShot’s affect on teens. He also wants a focus on its combination with alcohol, comparing the product to caffeinated alcoholic beverage Four Loko.
“The AeroShot caffeine-inhaler is being marketed as a party enhancer; it can facilitate excessive drinking and its effects have never been examined by independent regulators to determine their impact on the human body and in combination with alcohol, especially for adolescents,” Schumer said.
AeroShot’s website states that it is safe to use and that the product will not enter into the lungs, citing years of research in independent lab studies.
Last year, Schumer was successfully able to lobby the FDA to take action against the distribution, marketing, and sale of Four Loko over concerns with alcohol-related emergencies.
