ONONDAGA COUNTY -- Central New York is getting a chance to connect several 911 centers.

While in Madison County on Monday morning, Senator Charles Schumer announced that the federal government has reversed course when it comes to our local 911 centers. The Department of Homeland Security has agreed to let Onondaga County apply for $325,000 in federal funding to upgrade radio frequencies. That upgrade will create a five county network, so Onondaga, Madison, Cayuga, Oswego, and Cortland counties can all communicate in an emergency.

The DHS first said no to the request because the radios had originally been purchased using non-DHS funding. That policy has no been reversed, so onondaga County can resubmit its request for the money.
