SYRACUSE -- A new national retailer is moving into downtown Syracuse.
Villa, a Philadelphia-based retailer that specializes in urban-inspired apparel and footwear, celebrates its grand opening today at 317 South Salina Street. The building underwent a $2.5 million renovation that includes 12 residential units on the upper floors. They will be ready for occupancy within the next month. The ground floor retail space build-out was supplemented by a $29,200 grant from the Downtown Committee. "Villa will be a great addition to the unique, quality retailers downtown Syracuse is known for," said Peter Elitzer, developer of 317 South Salina Street. "We saw the potential in this building and this block when we began this project and are excited to be a part of the momentum occurring here."
Officials with the Downtown Committee say the store will play a part in the renaissance of downtown's Salina Street corridor. They say $65 million has recently been invested in or is currently being invested in the heart of downtown.
Villa has 34 locations around the Northeast and Midwest.
Villa is the second national retailer to locate downtown within the last two years. In 2010, the Urban Outfitters opened on Walton Street in Armory Square. Over the past year, 21 new businesses have opened in downtown Syracuse. "We are thrilled to welcome Villa to downtown Syracuse," said Merike Treier, executive director of the Downtown Committee of Syracuse. "Their decision to locate on the 300 block of South Salina Street demonstrates the continued resurgence of this area that is critical to Syracuse's identity and economic development."
To celebrate its grand opening, Villa is offering a buy 1 item, get 1 item for $1 on Saturday. From 9am-10am Saturday, the first 50 customers will receive a $50 gift card. Former SU basketball star Derrick Coleman will make a guest appearance at the store from 12-1pm.
