A Utica man is accused of sticking a knife in a bed starting a fire during a domestic dispute.
Utica police were called to a home on Whitesboro Street on March 1. They say a woman and her boyfriend got into an argument and he became verbally abusive. Scared for the safety of her children, she put them in the other room.
Police say 40-year-old James Brady, of Deerfield Drive in East Utica, got a knife from the kitchen and stuck it in the bed, then threatened to set the house on fire. Police say Brady then set a blanket on fire, which spread and caught the banister on fire.
The woman was able to put the fire out, but police say he wouldn't let her leave. She was eventually able to get away.
Brady is charged with arson, reckless endangerment, criminal possession of a weapon, criminal mischief, endangering the welfare of a child and menacing.
