SYRACUSE -- A number of Syracuse businesses are donating to the Food Bank of Central New York.

The Food Bank says that providing protein-rich food is often a challenge. In order to meet that demand, Smithfield and the United Food and Commercial Workers Union delivered 120,000 servings (30,000 pounds) of protein to the Food Bank.

"We would like to thank Smithfield, the UFCW and TOPS for their continued support of our mission. The protein items donated by Smithfield and the UFCW are such an important part of a nutritious meal for participants of the emergency food network," said Kathleen Stress, Chief Operating Officer at the Food Bank of Central New York.

Tops Markets donated $33,310 as part of their Check out Hunger Campaign where Tops customers donated $2, $3 or $5 upon checkout.

"Helping to eradicate hunger is the lead component of our community mission statement at Tops," said Mike Patti, Tops Regional Vice President.

The Food Banks says that more than 50 million people in the U.S. experience hunger daily. One in six adults and one in four children know what it is like to decide between buying food and paying for other necessities.
