SYRACUSE -- The East Syracuse Minoa Central School District finalized the sale of Heman Street School to Lakewood Development LLC Wednesday.

The school sold for $460,000 and is located at 121 East Heman Street in Syracuse. The sale was approved in the fall of 2011.

"This is a big win for the District and the community," said ESM Superintendent Dr. Donna DeSiato. "The community will get some much needed senior housing."

Lakewood Development LLC plans to convert the school into 37 units of affordable senior housing, with occupancy for scheduled for February 2013. The projected is expected to cost around $6 million.

The renovated building will also host the East Syracuse Senior Keener lunch program that East Syracuse Elementary students visit each month.

The building will be renamed Heman Street School Apartments and the project will preserve as much of the original architecture as possible.

"After two years, this is a great day for the Village of East Syracuse, for the ESM School District and for us," Susan Kimmel, President of Lakewood Development LLC in East Syracuse said.
