VERNON, ONEIDA CO. -- A Vernon man is accused of jumping in front of a car wearing only pajama pants after ingesting the drugĀ Bath Salts.

Oneida County Sheriff's deputies say 36-year-old Jack Maine, of Rt. 31, jumped in front of a driver on Rt. 31 near Ostrander Road, causing the driver to swerve to avoid hitting him. Deputies say he was only wearing pajama pants at the time.

Deputies say they chased Maine into the barn yard of a local farm and a struggle broke out. They say Maine resisted as a deputy tried to handcuff him. He was eventually taken into custody.

Investigators say Maine later admitted to ingesting the new designer drug commonly known as Bath Salts. Authorities say they've seen a significant rise inĀ similar incidents.

Deputies say the drug can cause paranoia, delusions, super human strength, invincibility, hallucinations, suicide, aggressive and violent behavior and possibly even murder. The drug contains the chemicals Mephedrone and MDPV and may cause permanent psychosis from a single use or brain damage. Unlike cocaine and methamphetamine, drugs that cause similar side affects, Bath Salt overdoses are much more difficult to treat medically resulting in the possibility of permanent affects.

Maine was arraigned in the Town of Vernon Court on charges of disorderly conduct/obstructing traffic and trespass violations. He was also charged with resisting, a misdemeanor. Maine was sent to the Oneida County Jail. He will re-appear in the Town of Vernon Court at a later date.
