VERNON -- Lawmakers in Oneida County want Vernon Downs to become a real casino.
The County Board of Legislators have signed a petition asking the state to let Vernon Downs expand into table games. The racino already has video slot machines, but, lawmakers say expanding to table games like craps, roulette, and others, will help bring in revenue and create jobs.
The state legislature recently passed an amendment to the state constitution that would allow seven privately owned casinos in New York. Those locations have not been chosen.
"Creating direct and indirect jobs as well as enhancing tourism are two ideal outcomes that comes from legalizing table gaming in New York and Oneida County", says Legislator Rose Ann Convertino. "Unfortunately, New York has been unable to capitalize on this economic opportunity; this amendment would allow that to change."
The petition will be circulated at the board's next meeting on April 11th for signatures.
