A new study has some health experts concerned about some women seeking birth control. The problem isn't the drugs themselves, but how these women are getting the drugs without a prescription. That could lead to serious health repercussions.
With the current state of healthcare, Dr. Jorge Galdamez says a lot of Latinos are taking matters into their own hands. "They have no insurance, they don't have any money to go see a doctor, so it's very easy for them to just cross the border and get the medication," Dr. Galdamez said.
According to a a new study by the American Journal of Public Health, birth control is no exception. The study finds Latinas are buying their birth control across the border. In Mexico, birth control is cheaper and it's sold over the counter.
The study also finds undocumented immigrants are also following the trend and buying birth control on the black market. That creates a risk that could come with some serious health hazards. "I mean they need to be discussed with a primary care doctor or a physician because they come with their own side effects and they come with their own interactions," said Dr. Galdamez.
A lot of it depends on the patient's medical history, which should be evaluated before beginning any form of birth control. "What kind of medical conditions they have, do they have any personal history of any clots let's say because one of the complications with birth control is an increased risk of blood clots," Dr. Galdamez said.
More importantly is knowing that when it comes to birth control, there is more than one option. "Yeah it may be available in other countries but still I think it's for our own good and safety, that we have these regulations here," Dr. Galdamez said.
Although most of the birth control that is sold in Mexico are the same brands sold here in the U.S., medical professionals should decide which one is best for you. Even if you don't have insurance, there are non-profit agencies that can offer affordable alternatives.
