SYRACUSE -- Onondaga County will pay hundreds of thousands of dollars to the family of a fallen firefighter.
At their meeting on Tuesday, County Legislators unanimously approved a resolution authorizing the county to pay about $863,000 to the family of Timothy "T.J." Lynch. Lynch was one of two firefighters killed during a house fire on Sweet Road in Pompey ten years ago.
The Lynch family claimed wrongdoing on the part of the Fire Coordinator at the time, Mike Waters, along with others contributed to the dangerous situation.
The $863,000 payment is Onondaga County's portion of a $1.1 million lawsuit filed by the family. Legislature Chairman Ryan McMahon says "I think this settlement puts this issue and this chapter in this community behind us. Obviously there's a lot of regret for what happened and we think this is a fair settlement and a good way so everybody can move forward."
The Manlius Fire Department recently marked the 10 year anniversary of the fire with a special remembrance for Lynch and fellow firefighter John Ginochetti.
