Perhaps you know the feeling, you're driving along the New York State Thruway at 65 miles per hour when out of nowhere some driver passes you like you're standing still.
Next week, State Police intend to crack down on speeders on the Thruway. Sergeant Robin Urbaniak says it's called "Operation Spring Brake"...brake as in slow down.
"What we'll be doing is enforcing speeding and violations mostly around work zones and on the Thruway in general." Urbaniak told reporters at a news conference near the Dewitt entrance to the Thruway.
State Police will be out in force for 5 days beginning next Monday May7th trough Friday, May 11th. Last year, Operation Spring Brake resulted in 2,218 tickets along the entire length of the Thruway.
A worst case example of speeding on the Thruway happened yesterday with the arrest of 25 year old Nikkolaus McCarthy of Charlton, New York. State Police say he was riding his motorcycle at speeds of up to 166 miles in the Albany area before he was stopped in the Town of New Paltz. Sergeant Urbaniak says it's fortunate some innocent motorist wasn't hurt. "You go to pull out in the left lane and here's this guy . You're not expecting somebody going 160. I'm amazed no one got hurt yesterday. It was crazy."
Operation Spring Brake will also target drivers who disobey New York's "Move Over" law. The law requires motorists to move into the left lane when passing police, firemen or construction crews with flashing amber lights. Sergeant Urbaniak explains, "If you have both lanes open... and you can do it safely, slow down and move over. If there's a lot of traffic and you can't move over, don't panic, just relax, slow down and keep an eye on the construction workers and you'll be OK."
