SYRACUSE -- A 10-year-old girl is blamed for starting a fire on Bellevue Avenue in Syracuse on Thursday.

The girl was playing with a lighter when the three story wood frame home at 1320 Bellevue Avenue went up in flames, according to Syracuse Fire investigators.

The fire started on the ground level rear porch, according to investigators. The rear porches will have to be demolished in the coming days because of structural stability.

The fire started shortly after 5:30 p.m. Thursday. When crews arrived on scene, the house was fully engulfed in flames, and firefighters had to knock down the flames from the outside before going in, according to Deputy Fire Chief Charles Duffy.

The original call to 911 implied kids may have been trapped, but firefighters say everyone inside made it out safely. A dog did die in the fire.

A Syracuse firefighter had to get medical attention for a heat-related condition. The warm temperatures made it an especially tough fire to fight, according Duffy.

"We had our hands full initially. It was a tough fire especially with the temperatures. It was tough on the resources," said Duffy.

The local Red Cross chapter is assisting two families after their apartments sustained major damage. The five adults and two children who lived in the building were not able to stay in their homes.
