ALBANY -- Dozens of companies across New York State won't be getting their tax breaks back.

Friday, the Empire Zone Designation Board voted to deny reconsideration for dozens of companies that lost their Empire Zone certification back in 2009. They have not been getting the Empire Zone tax breaks since then.

Of the more than 30 offices involved, 17 are in Syracuse. There are also companies in Auburn, Cortland, Oswego, and Watertown.

The Empire State Development Commissioner says the businesses were not in compliance with requirements of the program. Commissioner Kenneth Adams says, "The Cuomo Administration has been clear that it views the Empire Zones program as a waste of taxpayer dollars and we moved aggressively to eliminate the program. Therefore, I am pleased with the decisions today by the Empire Zone Designation Board not to overturn the original decertifications by the Commissioner. Applications were reviewed in a thorough and open process, and now a final decision has been reached by the Board to affirm the decertification of businesses that were not in compliance with the requirements of the Empire Zone program."

Empire Zone tax breaks were aimed at creating jobs.

The board will have to officially notify the companies of Friday's decision. Businesses can still challenge that final determination.
