DEWITT -- The DeWitt Police Department honored some of the people who made a difference in the town during the past year.
14-year-old Matthew Salbert was one of the people who received an award Tuesday.Salbert was exploring the wooded area behind Shoppingtown Mall when he found what turned out to be the remains of a missing woman.
Tracy Kulas disappeared in 2005. Police say Matthew did everything right when he found the remains.
He didn't touch anything, but he didn't ignore it either.
Salbert immediately alerted his mother. "I knew the police would want to investigate so i didn't want to disturb anything. I just left it to police to do their investigation on it," Salbert said.
The teen says he's used to finding bones, but they're usually animal bones.
He says the experience has made him interested in a career in law enforcement.
6 citizens and 13 members of the police department were given special awards today.
Officer Donald Baumann and Christopher Fuller both received the life saving award for saving two separate people in suicide attempts.
