UTICA -- Authorities say an 8-year-old Utica boy is recovering after being struck in the head by a samurai sword swung by his father during a fight with another man.

Police in Utica tell local media outlets that 42-year-old Thar Kyi barged into the home in the 700 block of Elizabeth St. where his three children were getting ready for school around 8:20am Tuesday morning. Then, police say he began swinging the sword at the boyfriend of the children's mother.

Investigators say their mother's boyfriend was helping tie the shoes of the 8-year-old, when another child opened the door to leave. When he did this, the children's father ran in the door, brandishing a Samurai sword.

Investigators say that the father then ran toward the boyfriend and attempted to strike him with the sword, but he missed and struck the 8-year-old in the head, cutting him. The other child rescued the child and they ran from the house. A fight ensued between the two men and the victim was cut several times with the sword.

Officers also learned that there was an active order of protection against Kyi.

The boy was treated at the hospital for non-life-threatening injuries.

Investigators found that Kyi fled to the Syracuse area. Kyi was eventually found in the Syracuse area and charged with assault, burglary, criminal contempt and criminal possession of a weapon. He's being held in Oneida County Jail.

It couldn't immediately be determined if he had a lawyer.
