Schenectady man dies after jumping into water at Canajoharie Falls

CANAJOHARIE (AP) -- Police say a 25-year-old man died after jumping into the base of a waterfall in an upstate New York gorge.

Montgomery County Sheriff's deputies tell local media outlets that friends of 25-year-old Israel Vazquez called 911 Monday afternoon after the Schenectady man jumped into the water at Canajoharie Falls and was unable to resurface.

Emergency officials who responded pronounced Vazquez dead at the scene. An autopsy is scheduled later this week.

Police say the area Vazquez jumped from, about 45 miles west of Albany, is posted as a "no trespass" area. His three friends were ticketed for trespassing.
