SALINA (AP) -- An upstate New York cemetery believes metal thieves are behind the disappearance of at least 10 flag standards from the graves of veterans.

The Syracuse Post-Standard reports that the widow of a Korean War vet discovered one of the flagpole holders was missing when she went to tend the flowers at her husband's grave in Assumption Cemetery on Saturday.

Cemetery manager Michelle Berg tells the newspaper the standards started disappearing just before Memorial Day. She described the thefts as "disheartening" and horrible."

A report has been filed with the Onondaga County sheriff's office. The cemetery is in the town of Salina on the Syracuse city line.
