STERLING, CAYUGA CO. -- Authorities say five people were injured Thursday after a car and truck collided at a rural Central New York intersection.

State Police tell CNY Central that a tractor-trailer and a car collided shortly before 11:10 a.m. at the intersection of State Route 104 and State Route 38 in the Town of Sterling, near Lake Ontario 30 miles northwest of Syracuse.

Troopers say a Honda Civic driven by 18-year-old McKayla Kaestle of Phoenix was headed north on Route 38 when she came to a stop at Route 104. Kaestle then started to cross the road and was hit by a 2010 Mack tractor-trailer loaded with corn, driven by 52-year-old Marvin Beeman of Oswego. The Honda spun around before coming to rest on the side of the road.

All five occupants of the Honda were taken to Syracuse hospitals, one by helicopter. Beeman was not injured. Troopers say his quick thinking helped avoid an even more dangerous situation.

Kaestle was ticketed for fairlure to yield right of way. A 16-year-old passenger in her car was ticketed for failing to wear a seat belt.
