TOWN OF SALINA -- Residents who live in the areas of Salina, North Syracuse, and Liverpool were without power after a fire at a substation early Friday morning.

At the outage's peak, National Grid's website reported approximately 2,000 homes without power in the suburbs north of Syracuse. A transformer fire at the National Grid substation near Hopkins Park sparked up around 1:00 a.m., initially knocking out power to homes from Hopkins Road all the way to Buckley Road.

The road was temporarily shut down so crews could fight the fire, and no injuries were reported.

Donlin Drive Elementary School in the Liverpool School District dismissed summer classes at 10:45 a.m. due to the outage. The Onondaga County BOCES summer school program at North Syracuse Junior High School dismissed at 12:15 p.m., and summer activities at the Main Street School in North Syracuse are also cancelled today. Click here for the complete list of closures.

CNY Central has calls out to National Grid for information about the cause of the fire.
