HAMILTON (AP) -- Colgate University says it raised $480 million in a five-year capital campaign, passing its goal by $80 million.

The private, liberal arts college in Hamilton, south of Syracuse, says it raised more in this campaign that in the previous five fundraising drives combined.

The college, with a student body of about 2,900, has an endowment of $700 million. Total cost is about $55,700 a year and in 2011-12, the college provided an average aid award of $40,400.

Out of the $480 million raised, $141.5 million will go toward financial aid.
