SPRINGPORT -- The Cayuga County Sheriff's Office is investigating the death of a 69-year-old Binghamton man on Cayuga Lake.

Deputies say that around 4:30 Tuesday afternoon Roman Lewkowicz was on a pontoon boat with three acquaintances when he told the other people he was going to wade in the water and head to the shore.

The boat was anchored in waist-deep water in the Springport Cove area of Cayuga Lake.

Deputies say about 15 minutes later, a person on another boat anchored in the same cove noticed Lewkowicz floating face down, unresponsive in the water.  Lewkowicz  was brought to shore by nearby boaters, who called 911.

Lewkowicz was taken to Auburn Community Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

An autopsy and investigation into the cause of death determined that Lewkowicz died of natural causes as a result of a medical event.
