SYRACUSE -- A crash on the other side of the country has many people worried about older drivers on the road.

Police are trying to figure out whether it was bad brakes or bad judgment that caused a 100-year-old man to back his car into a crowd of school children, hurting eleven people in Los Angeles.

There's no legal reason he shouldn't have been behind the wheel, but it's raising questions tonight about senior citizens and driving.

So how old is too old to drive a car?

Driving gives people a sense of independence and freedom.

But, health experts say senior citizens and their families have to be realistic about when its time to hang up their car keys.

Driving experts say that elderly Americans are not the most dangerous group on the roads.

Bernie Greenhouse from the Safeway Auto Driving School says, "The age group that we know statistically that is most at-risk are 16-19 year-olds. They're 4 times more likely to be in an automobile accident than the population in general. We also know, though, that over the age of 75, the numbers start to deteriorate just like the 16-19 year-olds."

In New York State there is an office for older drivers through the DMV.

People at any age can have medical restrictions put on their license.
