SYRACUSE (AP) -- Federal authorities say two people have been charged with using an electronic device in a scheme to steal users' ATM numbers and PIN codes.
The U.S. attorney's office in Syracuse says 28-year-old Catalin Lucian Pitut and 41-year-old Dimitru Predoi are accused of attaching the device combining a pinhole camera and magnetic strip reader to an ATM in Broome County.
The scheme known as "skimming" allows thieves to fabricate bogus ATM cards and use them to loot bank accounts.
Assistant U.S. Attorney John Duncan said Thursday information wasn't immediately available about how much the pair might have stolen or if they'd operated elsewhere.
They are Romanian citizens. Prosecutors say Pitut has no known address. Predoi is from New York City.
Information about whether they have lawyers wasn't available.
