SKANEATELES -- A Weedsport man was critically injured after he crashed head-on with a pickup truck.

Onondaga County Sheriff Kevin Walsh says deputies were called to the 4300 block of State Street Road to investigate reports of a crash. Witnesses told deputies that 38-year-old James Rusyniak of Weedsport was driving a 1999 Ford Contour north on State Street Road when he crossed over the center lines directly into the path of 2008 Chevrolet pickup truck.

Michael Doupe, 34, of Phoenix was driving the Chevrolet pickup truck south on State Street Road.

Rusyniak was airlifted by Mercy Flight to University Hospital. He is currently in critical condition. Doupe and his father, who was traveling with Doupe, have minor injures from the crash. They declined to be transported to a local hospital.

Deputies who are investigating the crash believe Rusyniak might have fallen asleep at the wheel before crossing over the center lines into the southbound lane. Deputies have issued Rusyniak with a traffic ticket for driving over hazard markings.
