A field maintenance employee at Westhill High School found foul language and spray-painted pictures on the main field’ new artificial turf early Tuesday morning.

The Onondaga County Sheriff's Department is trying to figure out who is responsible.

Westhill's Athletic Director, Matthew Whipple, says the graffiti was likely drawn sometime late Monday.

"Unfortunate, very disappointing that someone would do that," says Whipple. "You hope the message is that it’s not the right thing to do."

The district doesn't know how much the damage cost, but says getting rid of the ink was a process.

Maintenance crews had to use a solvent to break down the paint and then clean it with water.

The turf was part of a nearly $29.8 million renovation project that was approved in 2010.

The school is on Onondaga Boulevard in Onondaga.
