Syracuse firefighters called in extra equipment to fight a noontime fire in a two family home on the city's South Side.

The alarm to 213 Rich Street, between Tallman Street  and Bellevue Avenue, came in just after noon.  Firefighters quickly declared it a 'special' alarm, calling in extra help to cut a hole in the roof at the back of the two storey house to get at the flames. Four upstairs rooms were engulfed in flames.

It took firefighters fifteen minutes to get the flames under control.  No peoople were hurt, but a dog and a cat died in the fire.  The cause is under investigation.
