SYRACUSE -- An open letter to Central New Yorkers:
It is time for full disclosure: I arrived in Syracuse in the Summer of 2000 and figured I'd be here for two years. Syracuse was never on my radar. Not for college and not for life. Twelve years later and counting, I am humbled and honored to be recognized among 39 other members of our community who "appreciate the importance of their role in advancing public good." My life is here, my job is here and it's a good match.
The Syracuse "40 Under 40" award honors individuals who "have excelled in the workplace and in the community." I try every single day to do both. The people I share this honor with will chart the course for the future of Syracuse and Central New York. I am proud to use my voice, and my position as Anchor & Managing Editor at CBS 5 News to share the success stories and shine light on the areas in need of improvement. Good news does not have to come at the end of a newscast as a side note. Sometimes it is the lead story and when that happens, no anchor on television in this town is more thrilled than I am.
My parents will be most proud of this award. They live in Scotia, outside Albany, NY and I know they wish I lived closer. They also know that you have to let go a bit when you realize your child is living his dream. I am. Aside from the fact that my career path took be away from "home," Syracuse has been a perfect fit. I know that because when I hear people complaining about our city I instantly make it my mission to stop them - and fix their perspective.
Simply put: I believe in Syracuse - and we could all use more of that. To the other "40 Under 40" award winners, I look forward to meeting you on November 14, at 11:00 a.m. at The Oncenter. The luncheon benefits 40 Below, a non-profit organization of young professionals and community members with a passion for local revitalization and unparalleled dedication to Central Upstate New York. Sounds like that could be a lead story... What could be more important?
