WESTVILLE (AP) -- State police say the driver of a car was killed when he veered into an oncoming tractor-trailer in northern New York.

Troopers say 49-year-old Anthony Bailey of Malone was driving in the town of Westville at about 7:30 a.m. Monday when his car crossed into an oncoming lane and collided with the truck.

Bailey was pronounced dead at a hospital. The truck driver, 45-year-old Michael Bono of Central Square, was treated for minor injuries and released.

State police tell the Press-Republican of Plattsburgh that Bailey retired in April after a 20-year career as a trooper to take a job with Homeland Security. He received the Brummer Award for attempting to rescue a woman from a submerged car in 2000.

The cause of the wreck is under investigation.

Westville is in Franklin County 160 miles north of Albany.
