SYRACUSE -- In September most high school teams are still trying to work out the early season kinks. That's not the case with the Christian Brothers Academy 200 medley relay team.
Last week in a meet against Cazenovia, the team of Maggie Fletcher, Summer Schmitt, Kathryn Coughlin and Destiny Cerlanek qualified for the state meet in November. The foursome swam the race in one minute and 54 seconds, good enough to qualify them outright. It left both swimmer and coach surprised.
"Since we only had a couple weeks of training it was kind of shocking," says freshman swimmer Kathryn Coughlin.
Head coach Bill Houser says "It's pretty amazing at this time of year. Usually, most teams are qualifying for states later in the season, once they've had more than two weeks of practice under their belts."
Maybe they shouldn't be too surprised, though. Three of the four girls on the team achieved the exact same feat last year. Freshman Summer Schmitt says the team's success comes from its support system.
"We're all really good friends so it's really easy to get along and help each other out."
Even though the team has qualified for the state meet more than two months in advance, Coach Houser says motivation won't be a problem.
"They perform when they need to perform. They really step up to the challenge. Whenever they have to swim well, there's never been a circumstance in my seven years when they haven't done that."
If the 200 medley team wasn't impressive enough, there are no seniors on the team, meaning this group will most likely be intact for years to come.
Congratulations to the CBA 200 medley relay team Destiny Cerlanek, Summer Schmitt, Maggie Fletcher and Katherine Coughlin this week's Dunkin' Donuts Action News Athletes!
