SYRACUSE -- Syracuse junior back Lena Voelmle earned her first BIG EAST field hockey Defensive Player of the Week award while classmate freshman back Amy Kee earned her first BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Week recognition. The pair helped the sixth-ranked Syracuse defeat No. 7 Connecticut 3-2 in double overtime on Oct. 17. It is Kee’s fifth honor of the season, as she was named the BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week on Sept. 14 and to the BIG EAST Honor Roll on Oct. 12, Sept. 21 and Aug. 31.
Voelmle was responsible for shutting down the nation’s top scorer when the Orange defeated No. 7 Connecticut. The junior back held UConn’s Loren Sherer without a goal through 88 minutes of play. Sherer entered the game averaging 1.53 goals per game and stood on top of the BIG EAST rankings in shots, points, goals, assists and game-winning goals.
Kee tallied the game-winning goal in the second overtime. The freshman back also was credited with an assist on SU’s first goal of the game. Kee’s goal in the 88th minute came off her game-high sixth shot.
With the win, Syracuse moves to 4-0 in the BIG EAST and stands alone in first place. Both Syracuse and Connecticut have clinched spots in the four-team BIG EAST Championship taking place in Providence, R.I., on Nov. 7 and 8. The final two spots have yet to be determined.
Syracuse returns to action at Villanova on Friday, October 23 at 7 p.m.
