The Syracuse Crunch fell to the Adirondack Phantoms Sunday night, 5-0, at the Glens Falls Civic Center.After a hard-fought 2-0 shutout win on Friday night at Norfolk, the Crunch were looking to keep it going away from the War Memorial at Oncenter after their first road win of the season and pick up more important division points on the third game of this four-game road trip.
Adirondack got on the scoreboard first, however, when Garrett Klotz beat Crunch starter Dan LaCosta just six minutes in to put the Phantoms up by a 1-0 count. Adirondack carried the play most of the first period, outshooting the Crunch by a 12-5 margin in the game’s first 20 minutes.
The game stayed that way until six minutes into the second stanza when Jon Matsumoto broke in shorthanded on LaCosta and was awarded a penalty shot after being hauled down by Mathieu Roy.
Matsumoto made the most of his opportunity and beat LaCosta with a wrister to give Adirondack the 2-0 advantage.
The Phantoms again carried play in the second period, outshooting the Crunch 13-8.
Adirondack struck again to go up 3-0 at the 4:36 mark of the third when Jared Ross gained the zone and dished it off to Ryan Dingle on the right side. Dingle, on his off-wing let a quick shot go that beat LaCosta high to the glove side.
Adirondack added to its lead and made it 4-0 with just over six minutes left in regulation. The play started when Derek MacKenzie flew down the right side on a 2-on-1 and fired a shot that missed the net and swung around the boards where it was retrieved by Adirondack.
Ross eventually picked the puck up and made a cross-ice pass to a wide open Jason Ward, who one-timed a shot past LaCosta.
The Phantoms added to their lead just two minutes later when Matsumoto found a loose puck in front of the net and buried it past LaCosta to make it a 5-0 game.
The Crunch were held to a season-low 19 shots and were outshot by a 38-19 margin.
CRUNCHABLES: The Crunch were shut out for the second time this season and second time in three games…Syracuse has been outshot in 9 of 11 games this year and are 2-5-1-1 in those contests.
