SYRACUSE -- Syracuse University Orange head football coach Doug Marrone announced in his regular Monday morning news conference that star wide receiver Mike Williams has left the team.
Marrone would not give details on why Williams came to this decision, and was not sure if the senior had also dropped out of school. Marrone also said that as of noon his players had not yet been officially informed of the news, but added he would not be surprised if they already knew.
Williams was suspended for the Akron game two weeks ago for an unspecified violation of team rules. He did not play last season because of academic problems.
Williams has nearly 800 yards receiving and six touchdowns so far this season. He ranks sixth nationally with 106.57 receiving yards per game and his seven receptions per game ties for 14th in the country. Both top the Big East Conference. He also had 20 touchdown catches in his career, tied for second all-time at Syracuse with Marvin Harrison.
The Orange’s new leading receiver is Donte Davis, who has 18 catches for 184 yards and one touchdown on the season.
Action News has put in a call to Syracuse University for further comment. It has not been announced whether Williams is still enrolled as a student at the school.
