VERONA -- The Turning Stone Resort Championship, a staple of the PGA’s Fall Series for the past three seasons, is moving to a new summer date effective next year.
The Oneida Indian Nation announced Tuesday that the 2010 Turning Stone Resort Championship will be played the week of August 2-8 as a part of the PGA Tour’s FedEx Cup season. The previous three tournaments have been played in September or October, when the weather is less conducive to quality golf.
The 2010 event is being called “transitional”, and no plans past next year have been announced. The tournament will be held in the slot on the PGA calendar previously occupied by the Reno-Tahoe Open. It will be played the same week as the World Golf Championships- Bridgestone Invitational.
"In a very short time, the Turning Stone Resort Championship has established a strong presence on the PGA Tour and has earned the respect and appreciation of the players for being a terrific tournament venue," said PGA Tour Commissioner Tim Finchem in a statement on Tuesday. "This transitional move to the first week of August within the FedEx Cup schedule will help with the tournament's continued growth and provide more desirable weather conditions. Moving forward, our goal is to secure an unencumbered date within the FedEx Cup schedule for Turning Stone."
"We are excited about the opportunity to host a summer event as part of the PGA Tour's FedEx Cup, ensuring a bright future for the Turning Stone Resort Championship in 2010 and beyond," said Ray Halbritter, Oneida Nation Representative. "This is a shining example of how parties can work together to make great things happen. The Oneida Nation and Turning Stone Resort look forward to continuing our partnership with the PGA Tour, which benefits the entire Central New York region."
Halbritter and the Oneida Nation have made no secret about their desire to move the tournament away from the fall, and to secure a yearly spot in the PGA’s regular season schedule.
According to the Oneida Nation, the 2010 Turning Stone Resort Championship will feature 132 players and offer 250 FedEx Cup points to the winner. The FedEx Cup is a three-year-old series of late-season tournaments designed to crown a tour champion similar to NASCAR’s Sprint Cup Chase.
In related news, the PGA Tour is leaving the FedEx Cup just as it is with the playoff schedule and points system.
Rick George, the chief of operations for the PGA Tour, said Wednesday that any adjustment to the points system was not on the agenda and not discussed at a board meeting earlier this week.
It would be the first time since the FedEx Cup began in 2006 that the points system was left alone. Tiger Woods won the $10 million prize this year, although four players had a chance to win the cup on the back nine of the Tour Championship.
George says the FedEx Cup has met its objectives and he doesn't anticipate any changes.
