SYRACUSE -- In this week's Toyota High School Game of the Week, the Westmoreland Bulldogs won the Class D Section III Championship with a 43-20 win over Weedsport at the Carrier Dome. It's the Bulldogs' third Sectional crown in the last four seasons.
The game didn't start all that well for Westmoreland, they fumbled on the first play from scrimmage and Weedsport recovered. The Warriors converted that into six points a few plays later when Brian Quigley found the end zone.
The Bulldogs rallied though, Justin Becker scored to tie the game, and then give Westmoreland the lead at 14-7. After that second touchdown, the Bulldogs pulled a surprise onsides kick and recovered, converting that into a touchdown and two point conversion for a 22-7 lead.
The game started to look like a runaway with Westmoreland leading 36-7 late, but Weedsport was undefeated for a reason and never folded. The Warriors scored a touchdown then recovered an onside kick of their own, scoring again to cut the deficit to 36-20. That's as close as they could get though, Westmoreland held Weedsport off for the Section III Class D Title.
Westmoreland will play the winner of the Delhi vs. Groton Section IV Class D title game. That State Regional Playoff game will take place next Friday, November 13th at 5:00 p.m.
