The Iroquois Nationals got the Under 19 World Lacrosse Championships in Finland off to a potent start offensively with a 24-2 win over England. The Nationals gained control from the get-go, winning the majority of face-off in the early going.
The Nationals' coaching staff had a plan of working hard and being physical, while maintaining a good mind set, and the players certainly pulled that off, setting the tone for a tough tourney to come.
In other action, Team USA beat Australia 24-6. Australia started the game with leads of 1-0 and 2-1, but U.S.A. was able to run away with it from there.
Matt Kavanagh led USA with three goals and three assists in the first half. Kyle Keenan put the game way with four goals. Joey Leonard, Daniel Eipp, and Ryan Tucker all contributed offensively as well.
While the Americans are pleased with the outcome, they say they already have their minds set on their next game against Canada. "We said in the huddle we're going to enjoy this game for a little bit," said Kavanagh, "but we gotta look forward to (Saturday) night. It's the biggest game of our lives so far."
