AFGHANISTAN -- A soldier from Liverpool has been killed in combat in Afghanistan, making him the 2,000th member of the U.S. military to be killed there.

Sgt. 1st Class Daniel T. Metcalfe, 29, was killed on September 29th, in Sayyid Abad. Sergeant Metcalf died from injuries he suffered when enemy forces attacked his unit.

He was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 503rd Infantry Regiment, 173rd Airborne Brigade Combat Team, Caserma Ederle in Vicenza, Italy.

A memorial was held today in Penfield, just outside of Rochester, where he attended high school.

He is survived by his wife and three children. His father says his son will be buried at Arlington National Cemetery.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo has directed that flags on state government buildings be flown at half-staff on Tuesday, October 9, in Metcalf's hour.
