OSWEGO -- A town hall meeting on the NY SAFE Act attracted a large crowd at the Y & Y Armory in the city of Oswego. About 175 people were estimated to be in attendance.

Representatives from the Division of Criminal Justice Services are holding meetings across the state in an attempt to explain the provisions of New York’s recently enacted gun control law to gun owners and other concerned citizens.

Michael Green, Executive Deputy Commissioner of the DCJS told CNY Central’s Jim Kenyon that the purpose of the town hall meetings is not to get into a discussion over whether the gun control laws are good or bad, but rather, to provide information about its provisions.

Nevertheless, people are using these forums to express their opposition to the NY SAFE Act.

The president of the New York State Conservation Council, Chuck Parker, says that his organization considers the NY SAFE Act an unconstitutional infringement on the second amendment.

He also says the NYS Conservation Council takes issue with the manner in which the NY SAFE Act passed the legislature in Albany earlier this month without public hearings.

Ted Strang, an individual attending the event, says he intended to bring a sign into the meeting to show is opposition to the law but was prevented from doing so.

A spokesperson for the DCJS confirmed that signs are prohibited from the forums, whether they are for or against the law.

A second meeting is set for 5:00 p.m. Wednesday at the LaFayette Town Hall in Onondaga County. It is also expected to draw a large crowd.

According to a Quinnipiac University poll released Wednesday, Cuomo's popularity has plummeted about 15 points after he pushed tougher gun control measures into law.
