WHITESTOWN, ONEIDA COUNTY -- Police in Oneida County are investigating the killing of two dogs that were shot and left on railroad tracks in central New York so they would get hit by a train.

The dogs were both shot in the head and left on the tracks, according to Whitestown Police. Officials say one of the dogs was also hit by a train.

Police say a CSX railroad employee found the dogs last week and reported it to police.

Police say they believe the pit bull-shepherd mixes were shot early on the morning of Feb. 20.

Police say they saw the dogs on WKTV’s webpage for missing pets. Police contacted the owner who confirmed to police that they were his dogs on Tuesday.

The owner told WKTV that the dogs, Pitbull-Shepherd mixes, had been missing since early last week.

Police are asking anyone with information to call the Whitestown Police Department at 315-736-1100.
