SYRACUSE -- The man accused of raping a 10-year old girl and killing a woman in Clay was injured in a fight with another inmate in the Onondaga County Justice Center Friday, according to Sheriff Kevin Walsh. David J. Renz, 29, was taken out of jail for his arraignment in Federal Court soon afterwards.
Now, Sheriff Walsh says Renz told investigators he does not want to press charges against anyone involved in the fight.
Other media reports say during his court appearance Renz's face was swollen and he claimed his nose had been broken.
Walsh says Renz is now back in the Onondaga County Justice Center tonight. Due to the nature of his crime and the incident with the other inmate he's been placed into protective custody. Renz is also being guarded for the time being. Despite other media reports, Sheriff Walsh tells CNY Central Renz will not be moved to another facility for the time being.
Renz was arrested last night in Clay after police say he abducted 4 7-year-old Lori Bresnahan, of Liverpool and a 10-year-old girl from the parking lot of Great Northern Mall. Police say he raped the girl then later drove the pair to Verplank Road, where he stabbed Bresnahan. The girl was able to get away.
Renz was charged with possessing child porn in January.
