ATTICA -- The man who strangled a mother of four in Oneida County was found dead in his prison cell on Tuesday.
31-year-old Craig Ingersoll was found hanging and unresponsive in his single cell around 9:40 p.m. Tuesday at the Attica Correctional Facility.
Security staff entered the cell and called emergency responders. They did CPR, but Ingersoll was eventually pronounced dead.
The death is under investigation by the Department of Corrections and Community Supervision, the State Police, and the State Commission of Correction, and the Wyoming County Coroner's Office.
Ingersoll was serving a 25 year to life sentence on charges of murder and criminal sexual act.
A jury convicted Ingersoll of killing 29-year-old Jennifer Bennett of Utica during a sexual assault. Prosecutors say Ingersoll strangled her after paying her for sex in January 2007 and then dumped her body at the Deerfield Fire Department north of the city. Her snow-covered body was found by a group of people sledding behind the firehouse.
