SYRACUSE -- The Syracuse Crunch had a special guest Wednesday afternoon during practice at the War Memorial at Oncenter. Chief Meteorologist Wayne Mahar of Action News was on hand to take a shot at stopping pucks.
Mahar, though a meteorologist by day, is a hockey player at heart. He has played for many years and at various levels. These days he can be seen at local rinks participating in adult men's league games for the Syracuse Gray Wolves or on the pavement for the annual Street Crunch game each summer.
Wednesday, Mahar was made an honorary member of the Crunch as he suited up between the pipes to deflect a flurry of pucks instead of being in the studio predicting flurries in the sky. After pulling on a Crunch practice jersey, Mahar ventured into the net where he would go on to face shots from players Alexandre Picard, Adam Pineault, Blair Yaworski and Jon Mirasty, among others. Crunch goaltender Dan LaCosta acted as his guide throughout the drills.
