NEW YORK -- The NFL Network is reporting that New Orleans Saints offensive coordinator Doug Marrone has accepted an offer to be Syracuse University's next head football coach. The network reports that the former SU player did not deny that report when asked about it before Thursday night's game between the Saints and Chicago Bears.
SU Athletics will not confirm the story, in fact Action News received an email from SU Athletics with a statement from Gross saying the search for a new head coach is "ongoing". Gross is quoted as saying in another report that the job is currently not offered up.
Earlier on Thurday, East Carolina head coach Skip Holtz withdrew his name from consideration to become the next head coach at Syracuse. Reports had him turning down a deal worth almost 12 million dollars. Holtz released a statement saying in part: "I simply am too focused on our preparations for the bowl game and many other of our short and long-term goals to fairly evaluate what I feel is a promising situation at Syracuse."
