GEDDES -- The State Fairgrounds will undergo a big transformation to host the AHL's first-ever outdoor hockey game in February. That's when the Syracuse Crunch will take on the Binghamton Senators at the Grandstand. State Fair Director Dan O'Hara says there as some logistical issues to deal with. An entire ice rink will have to be built in the Grandstand. And that means bringing in lots of materials.
Since the Grandstand is not usually used in winter, another issue will be making sure the hot water and other amenities are up and running. O'Hara says the Crunch need hot water to run the Zamboni. It will also be needed for the concession stands.
O'Hara says staff is prepared to deal with the challenges, and they consider it an opportunity. He says "we like to do things differently at the fair." And if the hockey game is a success, they are looking into hosting more winter activities like snowmobiling and cross country skiing events.
